Plants
sunn hemp
Crotalaria juncea L.
Family: Fabaceae · Genus: Crotalaria
Indian hemp
Annual green-manure legume, fixes up to ~450 kg N/ha, ideal for the Placenta I phase. Breaks nematode cycles and contributes large amounts of fertilizer biomass. Pasini lists it among Accumulation-system species and as an herbaceous fertilizer biomass.

Where it fits in a guild
Sunn hemp takes the High stratum in the Placenta I phase of succession — in a guild it shares the line with species from the other strata, each harvesting light at its own height, in its own time. It also fixes nitrogen, feeding the soil for its line neighbors.

🪴 Cultivation
Fast-growing annual green manure. In Brazil sow Sept–March at ~25 kg/ha in 0.5 m rows (~30 seeds/linear m) or 8 kg/ha broadcast (40–50 kg/ha internationally). Nodulates with cowpea-type rhizobia, fixing ~150–300 kg N/ha (source-dependent). Cut/incorporate ONCE at early full flowering (~60 days tropics; 110–140 days Brazil) before it lignifies; drought-tolerant, frost-sensitive (killed below ~ -2 °C).
✂️ Management & Pruning
Annual crop — cut and incorporate ONCE at early flowering; it does not resprout.
📅 Phenology
Flowering months: February, March, April
