balsa
Ochroma pyramidale (Cav. ex Lam.) Urb.
Family: Malvaceae · Genus: Ochroma
balsa wood
Fast-growing pioneer neotropical tree — reaches 20 m in 5 years. IPOEMA cites pau-de-balsa among fast-growing prune-tolerant species, alongside eucalyptus, ideal for the Secondary 1–2 stage (up to 15 years). Lightest commercial timber on the market, used for model-making, insulation and surfboards. Excellent transient shader and biomass producer in SAFs.

Where it fits in a guild
Balsa takes the High stratum in the Secondary I phase of succession — in a guild it shares the line with species from the other strata, each harvesting light at its own height, in its own time.

🪴 Cultivation
A short-lived, light-demanding pioneer that needs constant moisture and does not tolerate waterlogging (roots suffocate in saturated clay). Deep, fertile, well-drained soil (pH 5.5–6.5, tolerates 5–8); rainfall 2,500–3,000 mm (tolerates 1,500–4,000; up to 4 months dry if humidity stays high). Hard-testa seeds need heat scarification (boiling water/fire); germination 65–75% in 6–28 days, viable several years. Reaches 20 m and 60 cm diameter in 7 years; wood deteriorates after 12–15 years.
