Plants
punting pole bamboo
Bambusa tuldoides
Family: Poaceae · Genus: Bambusa
verdant bamboo
A clumping bamboo native to southern China, with straight, relatively slender culms 6–12 m tall, widely used as poles, in light construction and crafts. It forms compact clumps and grows quickly, resprouting from the rhizome after cutting. It tolerates pruning well and adapts to tropical and subtropical climates.

Where it fits in a guild
Punting pole bamboo takes the High stratum in the Secondary I phase of succession — in a guild it shares the line with species from the other strata, each harvesting light at its own height, in its own time.

🪴 Cultivation
A compact clump, good for poles and living fences in smaller spaces than the giant bamboos. Propagated by culm cuttings and division. The 'ventricosa' (Buddha-belly) form is ornamental.
✂️ Management & Pruning
A compact clump managed by selective harvest of poles: cut mature 3–4-year-old culms close to the ground, keeping the younger ones for clump renewal. Being a clumper (no running rhizome), management is simply thinning the center of the clump to aerate and let in light, with no containment barriers needed. Tips and fine leaves serve as mulch on the bed. It resprouts vigorously from the rhizome after each cut, replacing the poles within a few seasons.
