black pepper

Piper nigrum L.

Family: Piperaceae · Genus: Piper

Secondary I Low No biomass production
Franz Eugen Köhler, Köhler's Medizinal-Pflanzen · Public domain · Wikimedia Commons

Woody climber native to SW India, naturalized in the Brazilian Amazon. Embrapa records it among perennial crops in Amazonian SAFs: trained on live tutors (gliricídia, ingá), produces for 5 years yielding 1.5–3 kg of pepper per plant. Low-to-medium stratum, needs partial shade and well-drained soils. Susceptible to fusariose — syntropic consortia reduce disease pressure.

Where it fits in a guild

Black pepper takes the Low stratum in the Secondary I phase of succession — in a guild it shares the line with species from the other strata, each harvesting light at its own height, in its own time.

🪴 Cultivation

Prefers deep, well-drained, organic-rich soils with pH 6–7 (tolerates 5–7.5); tolerates neither wind nor waterlogging. A climber reaching 8–10 m on a live tutor. Begins bearing in 3–4 years and reaches full production by year 7. Propagated from ~45 cm hardwood cuttings taken from already-flowered shoots, which root easily.
