Raspberry, a perennial shrub with biennial canes of the Rosaceae family, exotic to Brazil and grown in cold regions of the south and in highland microclimates of the southeast. A small plant suited to the low stratum, it needs winter chill and fruits best in full sun. It flowers in spring and fruits from late spring into summer.

Where it fits in a guild

Raspberry takes the Low stratum in the Secondary I phase of succession — in a guild it shares the line with species from the other strata, each harvesting light at its own height, in its own time.

🪴 Cultivation

Propagated easily by root suckers, division and cuttings. Primocane (everbearing) cultivars also fruit in autumn on first-year canes. In warmer climates, low-chill cultivars adapt better.

✂️ Management & Pruning

Cane management, not tree pruning: the root is perennial but canes are biennial. In summer-fruiting (floricane) cultivars, cut the spent two-year-old canes to the ground after harvest and tie in the new canes on a trellis. In everbearing (primocane) cultivars, all canes can be mown to ground level in winter (Jun–Aug) for a single autumn crop. Thinning canes to 8–12 per meter keeps vigor up.
