Plants
apple
Malus domestica
Family: Rosaceae · Genus: Malus
The apple, a deciduous temperate fruit tree and the leading commercial orchard fruit of southern Brazil, concentrated around São Joaquim (SC) and Vacaria (RS). It requires winter chill (700–1,000 hours below 7 °C for most cultivars, though low-chill cultivars such as 'Eva' exist). It flowers in spring and fruits from late summer into autumn.

Where it fits in a guild
Apple takes the Medium stratum in the Secondary II phase of succession — in a guild it shares the line with species from the other strata, each harvesting light at its own height, in its own time.

🪴 Cultivation
Always propagated by grafting, since seedlings are highly variable. Wood and buds tolerate severe cold (to about -40 °C), but blossoms are damaged by late frosts. In mild winters it requires low-chill cultivars and sometimes chemical bud-break induction.
✂️ Management & Pruning
Train to a central-leader form (a central axis with tiered lateral branches), the standard commercial-orchard form that favors durable fruiting spurs. Formative and maintenance pruning is done in winter dormancy (Jun–Aug in the Southern Hemisphere), removing competing, upright and badly placed shoots. Thinning fruit in early summer improves size and reduces biennial bearing.
